Maya watches the city from her bedroom window
Her name is Maya. She is nine, and she cannot sleep. From her window she watched the giant wolf cross the street like the city belonged to him.

She told her mother — Elena, just off the night shift, too tired to hear it. She didn't believe her. She told her best friend. Leo laughed.
Maya fills her notebook with drawings of the giant wolf
So Maya did what nine-year-olds do with true things no one believes: she drew it. Once. Ten times. The black wolf, the amber eyes — so big it wouldn't fit on the page.
Atlas's amber eye looks back at Maya
That night, it passed her house again. But slower this time. It stopped under her window… and looked straight into her eyes.
