The next morning, Maya brings the notebook to school. Tucked between math worksheets: ten drawings of a wolf too big for any page.
Mrs. Okafor studies Maya's drawings without laughing
Mrs. Okafor stops at her desk. She doesn't laugh. She looks — a long time — and asks the question no one else thought to ask: "What's his name?" Maya opens her mouth. Nothing comes out. She never asked.
Maya writes in her notebook at her desk at night
On the walk home, Leo's laughter replays in her head. So she decides, right there, to stop showing him the drawings. The first small fracture.
Amber eyes watch Maya's window from the darkness
That night, under the last drawing, she writes two words: the giant. It isn't a name. It's a placeholder for one.
